This policy applies when providing services for any minor for counselling, assessments, or group programs. Please contact our administrative support team with any questions about this policy or how it may apply to your situation.
Sole Custody
When one parent/guardian has sole legal custody, we can provide services with only that person’s written and verbal consent. A copy of all court documents related to custody and guardianship must be shared with the therapist.
Joint Legal Custody
When parents/guardians have joint legal custody of the minor, whether they are in a relationship or separated/divorced, we require written and verbal consent of both legal guardians.
We will provide a Consent for a Minor Form that each parent/guardian must complete in advance. The therapist will also review consent verbally with each parent/guardian. Verbal consent can be obtained in the first session, or after the first session if one parent/guardian is not in attendance. Note that the second session will not be booked until verbal consent is received
from that parent/guardian.
Please verify that any other parent/guardian with the legal authority to give consent for your child/youth will do so before booking a service for your child/youth. The inability to obtain consent from a parent/guardian will not change the cancellation policy. It may also be difficult for your child/youth to start the process and then not be able to continue because full consent cannot be obtained.
