About Laura

Drawing on 10 years of psychological training and experience, I provide therapy services to adults, adolescents (ages 12+), and couples. Creating a supportive, collaborative, and empowering environment free of judgement allows my clients to build upon their strengths and move towards achieving their personal goals. In our sessions we will explore what is currently getting in the way of your productivity, relationships, and happiness, and develop the skills to tackle future challenges with confidence.

My Approach

My primary approach to individual therapy is rooted in cognitive-behavioural theories. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) examines the connections between our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and provides strategies for changing unhelpful patterns. Depending on my clients' needs, I draw from other evidence-based interventions, including dialectical behaviour therapy, motivational interviewing, and mindfulness strategies. For my work with couples I follow an emotionally focused framework with the goal of creating new cycles of interaction and emotional experiences between partners.

My Background

I completed my undergraduate training in psychology at Queen’s University in 2010. My graduate studies took me to Thunder Bay, ON where I received my Master’s in Clinical Psychology from Lakehead University. I recently completed the final requirement for my doctorate in Clinical Psychology, a year-long residency at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre. During my residency I worked with adults, adolescents, and military veterans with mood, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, and trauma-related disorders. I am currently a Registered Provisional Psychologist in the province of Alberta (#2455p).

My clinical work has been conducted in hospitals, clinics, and private practices. I have worked with individuals from various cultural, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds and with diverse presenting issues, sexual orientations, and gender identities. In all my work I strive to provide evidence-based and client-centered care.

My primary approach is cognitive behavioural therapy, which helps to break unhelpful patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviour. I also incorporate dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) skills to improve emotion regulation and interpersonal skills as well as motivational interviewing to help adolescents set and meet personal goals. While I generally meet with the adolescent alone, parents may be involved in a subset of the sessions. .

Trauma
After experiencing a traumatic event you may find that you become stuck in a pattern of negative thoughts, behaviours, and emotions...read more
In my work with individuals who have experienced traumatic events I utilize several evidence-based approaches. Prolonged exposure therapy allows clients to process and reorganize their emotional experiences of the traumatic event. Dialectical behaviour therapy complements the trauma-focused work by building emotion regulation and distress tolerance skills. I gained specialized skills and training in working with trauma at the Ottawa Operational Stress Injury Clinic which serves RCMP and military veterans.

Couples

Through our work, we will identify negative interaction styles and explore the emotional experiences that are at the root of these difficult patterns, with the end goal of reducing conflict and building a deeper connection and more secure attachment.
