Shauna Vanderheide

Practicum Student, Master of Art in Counselling Psychology

I started my professional journey working in the early childhood development field supporting children and their families fleeing family violence.  I moved my area of focus to adolescent development receiving a degree from the University of Victoria in Child and Youth Care where I was able to build on my ability to support youth and parents through the change process.  I spent the last 15 years working with youth escaping human tracking and pregnant and parenting youth.  I am now working on my Masters in Counselling Psychology where an emphasis placed on the biopsychosocial approach.  I am excited to continue to grow and expand my skills to support individuals through the healing and change process.

I have been privileged to witness the healing processed and positive change the therapeutic journey can have on individuals and throughout my masters I have gained a deeper appreciation for the therapeutic alliance.   My professional experience has helped me understand how trauma and our environment can impact our mental health and I look forward to supporting clients through their healing journey.  I am very appreciative of being able to further my experience and knowledge at River’s Edge Counselling where I will be able to expand my learning from both a supportive team off professionals and more importantly the clients.

What I like most about change is that it’s a synonym for “hope”.  If you are taking a risk, what you are really saying is, “I believe in tomorrow and I will be part of it”
