Getting through the Tough Stuff

A workshop for supporting children and teens through self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and other disclosures.

Two Sessions for Parents and Caregivers

Wednesday evenings, 6:30-8:30 pm

May 8 and May 15, 2024

As a parent, we always want what’s best for our children, but sometimes it can be hard to know what is the right way to support them, especially when it comes to the heavy unexpected things that can pop up in life, like suicidal thoughts or self-harm. But the reality is that there often is no one right way to respond. So what can we do?

In this workshop, we spend two sessions unpacking the difficult situations and disclosures that might arise and explore, in a non-judgmental and safe environment, how to meet our kids where they are at and provide the best support we can offer based on your family dynamics. In this workshop you can expect to cover:

  • Understanding child and youth brain development and how this impacts coping and stress responses

  • Creating and fostering resilience and self-esteem

  • How to respond and support disclosures

  • Coping skills and self-care skills for kids, youth, and parents/caregivers

This workshop will include handouts, community resources, and the opportunity to ask questions. It is meant for parents and caregivers of any age looking to gather either preventative information or additional information. Please keep in mind that this workshop is not intended to be a support group or psychotherapy group. Referrals can be provided for further support.

First week:

  • the basics of brain development

  • logical vs. survival brain

  • the impacts of stress

  • Window of tolerance

  • basics of coping

Second week:

  • building and fostering relationships and resilience (what is resilience and how do we build this?)

  • navigating how to respond to disclosures

  • Trauma-informed care at home

  • Coping and self-care for parents/caregivers

  • Community resources
