“The harder I listen, the smarter people get… People are telling their truth and it’s my job to help them figure out what that truth is about, what’s right for them, and how they can use it better.”

-M. F. Hoyt

My personal approach to mental health therapy is focused on really understanding what it’s like to be you. The single most important part of the therapy process is that you matter! What you’ve been through, what you’re struggling with now, what has you stuck, what you think, how you feel, what and who you love, and especially your hopes and dreams, they all matter! As we explore what it’s like to be you, I’ll help you by drawing on my training and experience in a variety of foundational and innovative counselling approaches so you can decide where you want to go.

My you-centred therapeutic approach is focused on the process of figuring things out. This makes it helpful for addressing a variety of concerns and is designed to build your skills so you don’t have to rely on therapy forever. I’m especially passionate about working with teens and adults struggling with depression, anxiety, overwhelming emotions, childhood or current family/relationship trauma, and those struggling to find purpose in life. My approach to couples therapy emphasizes developing a “you matter” mentality for everyone in the relationship. I have also been particularly helpful for those reluctant to give therapy a try or those who have tried and didn’t find the help they were looking for.

I started as a support worker for at-risk youth and families in 2015. After completing my Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology I provided mental health therapy at a not-for-profit agency working with individuals, couples, and families coping with depression, anxiety, thoughts of suicide, childhood trauma and abuse, difficulty managing anger and other emotions, conflicts in relationships, identity questions, struggles to find purpose in life, addictions, and many other challenges. I helped kids and their families as a school-based therapist in elementary and Jr. high schools. I was part of a team providing therapy and support for individuals and families involved with Child and Family Services and also consulting with those service teams. I have also facilitated a variety of therapy groups including healthy relationships and a CBT group. I provided assessments, group therapy, and short-term individual therapy in a health care setting. I began working in private counselling offices in April 2020.

When I’m not working, I’m usually hanging out with my family at home, reading, watching movies or gaming, and listening to philosophy podcasts. I also love camping and especially campfires!

Teens usually have enough people in their lives telling them what they’re supposed to do. I work really hard at listening so I can help teens understand what they’re actually going through and what they need.
